"The Consequences of Sin"

(Genesis 3:8-24)

Introduction

In the Bible the word sin means to "miss the mark", an archery term describing an archer’s inability to hit the target dead center. In life we "aim" for doing what is right, but we miss and stray from our intended goal. "Sin" is the anything that separates us from God. This began with man’s first decision to stray from God’s will and to go his own way. That first stray "arrow" has pierced the hearts of all men and women since and has caused them to rebel and turn away from God. The message behind these scriptures is to teach us that there are always "Consequences for our Sins"!

THE SHAMING. (8-9)

A."the man and his wife hid…I was afraid" - Because of their sin, guilt replaced joy, fear replaced fellowship, they were caught in their own trap and they felt the shame.

B. Psalms 32:3-4

C. The shame of sin paralyzes our whole being.

THE BLAMING. (10-13)

A. "she gave me from the tree… the serpent deceived me" – Faced with their sin, they began to accuse rather then confess, they searched for an "alibi"!

B. Exodus 32:21-24.

C. Sin can cause us to blame people, places or things to try and justify our actions.

THE MAIMING. (14-21)

A. "Cursed are you…in pain you shall…to dust you shall return" – The serpent is bound to the earth, cursed for all his days. The woman will now suffer pain in childbirth and the struggle of being subordinate to men. Men will have to labor from now on until death ends his suffering.

B. Deuteronomy 28:15-20.

C. Sin cripples us in many ways.

THE PAINING. (22-24)

A. "So He drove the man out" – They were sealed off in eternal rebellion against God.

B. Matthew 25:31-33 & 41.

C. The pain of sin is being separated from God.

CONCLUSION: SIN: Man is the cause: God is the cure!
