"THE NATURE OF MANKIND"
(Genesis 1:26-2:17)

Introduction: Why am I here? Words that have echoed over the course of man's existence and whose answer lies in God. In these verses we can discover the meaning of life and the nature of our existence. Chapters 1:26-2:3 describes the creation of mankind in a nut shell, while 2:4-17 give the details of that creation. In these verses we see our beginning and our reason for being. We owe everything to God and we owe it to ourselves to find out what we were created for and to answer the question: "What does it mean to be human?".

I. We Are Created in God's Image. (1:26-27 & 2:7)

A. "Let us make man (human beings) in Our image (resemblance), according to Our likeness (manner)" - refers to intelligence, morality, reason, and the ability to think abstractly. Most important we have a spirit or soul; we have the opportunity to connect with our Creator.

B. Acts 17:24-28

C. Man reflects the devine being that created him.

II. We Are Created To Subdue the Earth. (1:28-31 & 2:8-9, 15)

A. "subdue it (conquer or bring under control); and rule over (have dominion)...the earth"
"He placed the man...into the garden...to cultivate it (serve it) and keep it (protect)."
We must relate to our universe, learn from it, use it, and share with God in controlling and developing our environment.

B. Psalm 104:14

C. We are to join God in the awesome task of continuing the work of creation.

III. We Are Created To Obey God's Commands. (2:16-17)

A. "God commanded...eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat...from it you shall surely die."
We are free to enjoy God's gifts, but with this freedom comes responsibilities, to chose right from wrong, life or death. Obedience is the issue.

B. John 14:21 & 23

C. Following God's commands means eternal life.

Conclusion: We are here to reflect, work with and obey God!
